Miami Social… the new reality show that features Miami Beach

by Jamey on August 12, 2009

Ok, I admit it I am a reality TV show junkie.  Anything on Bravo will do for me.  When I heard a few months about Miami Social and then I read some reviews, I thought, “oh no, please don’t let it be THAT Miami”.  THAT Miami is the fake Miami.  The Miami that people who don’ t live here have branded in their heads; i.e. party town, models,  lots of fake people and everyone is beautiful and walking around in thongs. Let’s be honest,  THAT Miami does exist and in fact I think that is the image that is a big contributor that lures many people to move to the city.  However there is also another side.

One thing we need to be clear on is that although they call it “Miami” Social,  in fact most of the shots, condos and landscape are from locations on “Miami Beach” .  I assume they didn’t call  it “Miami Beach Social” because most people who don’t live here don’t really distinguish between the two.  But Miami and Miami Beach are two completely different areas.

If you can get through the drama (which is why everyone watches reality TV) then I think it’s fairly easy to see the other side.

What I like about Miami Social…

The landscape.  Have you seen the gorgeous shots of Miami Beach?  The skyline, the blue water, the gorgeous buildings?  That is not fake.    Although it’s a very small area, Miami Beach is packed with people from all over the world.  If you are walking down the street, you will hear many different languages in your ear, see all types of people and feel many different cultures that have influenced the city’s environment.

Have you noticed that most of the cast is actually hustling and working for a living?  That is definitely not fake.  You can have whatever you want in this city but most of us work really, really long hours in order to get it.   I can guarantee you that most are not lounging by the beach on the weekends.

One of the cast member’s girlfriends wants a baby and she mentions that all of her friends have kids.  Kids in Miami Beach?  What most non-locals don’t realize is that Miami Beach is super kid friendly.  If you are a Miami Beach resident, most of our parks which have the little fun pool parks for the kids and they are free.  The parks and recreation department is very good here and they have many activities for the kids.  There are also many different little playgrounds which have recently been updated and shaded off by city installed canopies.   What a better way to enjoy your childhood?  To be outside enjoying activities rather than haunched over a video game or tv?

They shoot a lot on Lincoln Road which is where many locals go to socialize, eat and shop.  It’s a long pedestrian street that stretches east to west across the beach with restaurants, bars, furniture stores, clothing stores and more flanking the north and south sides.

That cast.  Whether you can relate to them or not, they are real people living in Miami Beach and I have to say it takes a lot of guts to put yourself out there and be who you really are on TV.

In all, I think it’s a great addition to the Bravo family or maybe I am just a little biased because I am so proud of where I live, work and socialize.
