Obama, the Election and what it means for one Miamian…

by Jamey on November 6, 2008

Until today, two days after the election, I didn’t realize what an impact the election had on me emotionally.  I almost wrote about this initial experience after standing in line an hour and a half during one of the early election voting days and hearing about other Miamians standing in line for six hours or more.   Then I got busy so I put it off.

You see, I am a Southern girl from the Deep South, conservative family, and church three times a week.  I have always been a little different in my thinking, often challenged what I was taught, knew that life had more to offer than eternal damnation and knew that there must be other people out there that thought the same.  I married one, met more and met even more in Miami.

What does all of this have to do with Miami and a Real Estate Blog?  I was standing in the early voter line; I realized just how diverse Miami is and how proud I am to live in this city.   As I looked upon the sea of supporters during Obama’s acceptance speech, I felt like I was looking back at people in Miami.  African-American, White, Hispanic, Asian, Eastern European, a Southern Girl from the Carolinas…   I was so proud to be a Miamian.  If you are looking for a city that offers a diverse experience in lifestyles, in a very forward thinking way, look no further, Miami is it.  AND becoming more so every day.

Maybe you are not an Obama supporter and that’s ok.  Some of my very good Miami friends are also not Obama supporters.  We still love each other and they still love living in Miami.  Trust me, you will love Miami too.

In the end, my point is not about what Obama will do as President or whom I voted for as President, rather what this election represents.   How so many different people of different races, lifestyles and backgrounds came together to create a difference that we all believe in.  How so many different people of different races, lifestyles and backgrounds can come together and create a city that offers amazing opportunities for everyone.   To show that finally, we don’t just “talk the talk”, we are now finally beginning to ”walk the walk”.    It’s a good feeling to know that I live in a place that supports such diversity.  I am proud to be a Miamian.
