This year I served as the President of my condo association. It’s almost over, (clutching my fingers). I nominated my husband for next year and he will have the fabulous job serving on the board next year. I cannot wait…. (me snickering).
I remember last year when I was first voted on, everyone told me, “Get ready for the most thankless job of your life.” Who knew they would be so right?
Besides serving in a position that can sometimes take as much time as full time career, without the pay or recognition of a full time career, here are some other highlights that one can look forward to serving on their condo association board:
1. Expect random knocks on the door throughout the day and evening with unit owners asking you questions or voicing an opinion about something. Kiss you privacy goodbye!
2. Every time you need to go somewhere, you may have to plan a back passage escape route to your car. Otherwise be prepared to be stopped by some unit owner complaining about the cleaning company, the landscaping company or something else.
3. Be expected to give an “elevator speech” to unit owners who never attend any of the meetings but expect you sum up the highlights of the last meeting, every time you get into the elevator or meet them in the hall.
4. You get to learn first hand, who are the real crazy people in the building. You may even be so lucky to get an email or a phone call showing you just how crazy they really are and you get to experience first hand how it feels to be targeted by a crazy person.
5. You start to begin to understand why finding a good Property Management Company is so challenging in Miami Beach and Miami. I know first hand that the turnover rate is very high for these professionals.
Crazy unit owners + a big rainy season + a lot of concrete restoration projects + foreclosures + crazy unit owners + not a really big pay + managing up to 12-18 buildings per person = high turnover rate.
6. You quickly learn more than you would ever want to know about your condo bylaws and amendments.
7. Until you are in the seat, you never realize how much your condo association has to spend on attorney fees because when a unit owner doesn’t get their way, they automatically threaten with their attorney.
8. A “LEGAL OPINION” regarding the bylaws can cost thousands and thousands of dollars.
9. The majority of the unit owners are VERY SANE and PRETTY GREAT people, they voted for you and they believe in you & that’s a pretty great thing.
10. I am going to miss not being an “insider” next year. Umm? Maybe not.
NOW, GO FIND SOMEONE ON YOUR CONDO BOARD AND GIVE THEM A BIG HUG!
